Motorola has announced its acquisition of Aloqa, a privately held company that develops software that allows users to receive information about nearby events and bargains. Following the acquisition, Aloqa will be integrated into Motorola Mobility, the mobile-devices unit that the company plans to spin off in Q1 2011. The terms of the acquisition weren’t disclosed, but Motorola is planning to combine Aloqa’s program with its MOTOBLUR software, which will identify the users’ location allowing advertisers to send them information about places, events, or promotions in the region. Currently more than 1 million users have already downloaded Aloqa’s program for the Android platform and it’ll be interesting to see how much Aloqa will be able to help Motorola differentiate itself from other Android-powered devices out there.
