The folks over in Japan are placing a lot of focus on solar energy and now a stand for motor-assisted solar-powered bicycles has opened over in Tokyo This is the second such solar-powered stand there, and together offer 100 motor-assisted bicycles to the general public at 300 Yen/day. The electricity generated by solar cells at the stands is stored in large-capacity lithium-ion batteries which are in turn used to charge the lithium-ion batteries on the bicycles. Each bicycle is capable of traveling over 30km using its lithium-ion battery. The stands are beneficial as they are provided with backup from the grid, ensuring normal charging operation even through periods of prolonged rain.
