While you can bet that many Motorola Droid owners out there are looking forward to getting hold of the Android 2.2 update, the update will apparently not be offering two of the more requested features of the device, which are tethering and mobile hotspot functionality. The lack of tethering is down to the lack of a necessary application that isn’t part of this update. The lack of mobile hotspot is explained by a Motorola spokesperson as the device lacking the necessary hardware to support the mobile hotspot functionality. Of course, let’s not forget that Motorola will likely be placing a lot of focus on its current Droid X and the upcoming Droid 2…
Now, if Motorola could tell us what kind of “hardware” is needed for tethering, we’d be interested. At the very least, any Android phone should be able to tether via USB (especially with the debug mode hack). Then, if there’s Bluetooth, if should be able to act as a wireless modem. The software is all that’s needed.
