Getting a robot to walk just like a human is one of the larger challenges when it comes to the world of robotics, and DLR’s Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics have come up with a new bipedal research platform known as DLR-Biped that will work with their wheeled humanoid robot platform known as Justin. This effort took just 10 months, and was specially designed to study biped locomotion which could then be applied in future domestic service robots, as those will most probably need to be able to make their way up flights of stairs or step over small obstacles (such as pets and your kids, of course). The lack of a proper upper body is a wee bit scary, but at least it is a start which we hope to see implemented correctly down the road to assist mankind in their everyday living.
