UC San Diego Researchers Turn 3D HDTV Into Heads-up VR System

With 3D technology becoming cheaper and more available, it seems that folks are beginning to look further and start looking to virtual reality technology again. Some researchers over at UC San Diego came up with the interesting idea of pairing a $2,300 Samsung 3D TV with a half-silvered mirror, along with a touch-feedback controller to come up with a haptic-enabled heads-up virtual reality system (HUVR) that lightened their wallets by just $7,000. The funny thing is that they claim that this system outperforms the old PARIS HUVR system that was developed twelve years ago at a cost of $100,000, and is still in use today. Check out a video of this in action after the jump.
