Olympus Stylus Tough 6010 Camera Ships With Malware

This definitely isn’t the first time such an issue has happened, but it’s becoming increasingly common. We’re talking about the fact that Olympus has issued a warning to customers who recently purchased its Stylus Tough 6010 shockproof and waterproof camera. Apparently about 1700 units of these cameras shipped with malware on its internal XD cards. The camera itself isn’t affected, but the malware that’s residing on the XD card uses the autorun feature on PCs to launch itself and possibly infect the PC that it’s attached to. This is going to be rather disturbing news for folks who recently purchased this camera, and if you’re wondering if you have an affected camera (or specifically, XD card), you can enter the serial number into the company’s website, though it’s in Japanese. Do you think malware will be continued to be accidentally shipped on electronic devices in the future, or do you think that manufacturers will be able to increase their quality control and ensure that everything is safe?
