When the iPad was originally announced, Apple mentioned that the device would not be SIM-locked, but now it seems that statement doesn’t apply to folks over in Japan, as the Japanese iPad will be SIM-locked to Softbank Mobile. The good news is that the device will be subsidized, softening the blow to your wallet. It’s worth noting that folks over in Japan are more accustomed to their devices being SIM-locked; as carriers over there aren’t required to offer unlock codes to customers. Since this is the case, NTT DoCoMo subscribers who were planning to get the iPad must be really disappointed. The iPad is slated to go on sale in Japan this May 28th.
