The visually impaired often have a pretty hard time with modern technology, least of all the ability to use the Internet. Well, a team of researchers from the North Carolina State University are currently looking into a new prototype hydraulic and latching mechanism for a refreshable Braille display which will enable the raising of dots to the correct height, making it easily read. This display’s latching mechanism also supports weight being applied by a person’s fingers as the dots are read, featuring a zippy respond time that enables one to scroll through a document or Web site in a jiffy. It is nice to see such technology catering to the less able bodied among us, and we do hope that such displays will be cheap enough for the masses when produced.
