MWC 2010 has witnessed the comeback of Microsoft into the mobile OS race – at least in terms of hype and mind share (we’ll have to try the final product!). Just recently, Windows Mobile was considered by many as “lost” or “dead”, but Microsoft’s demo in Barcelona was convincing and quite effective in turning the tide in the public opinion battle. The user interface (UI) looks sexy and fast, and the OS is much more “open” to non-Microsoft services than previous Windows Phone platforms.
Microsoft has declared that it will take control of the user interface – a domain once considered by the company to be someone else’s problem (Microsoft used to say that they are providing the “pipes” and others can do the pretty UI). All of this has been made possible by the work done on the Zune HD, the only handheld that we would consider to be more responsive than the iPhone 3GS. “Every Windows Phone 7 will be a Zune” says Microsoft. We can’t yet say that Windows Phone 7 is as good as it looks – we’ll have to try that for ourselves, but in the meantime, we can say that it was the most exciting thing that we have seen at Mobile World Congress 2010.
