Do you think that LCD TVs can still improve? Well, a Japanese company called Zeon claims that it will be able to do so, thanks to a film it has developed for the polarizing plates of LCD screens, which would boost picture contrast significantly. This phase difference film is made from Cyclo Olefin Polymer, making it suitable for LCD TVs based on an in-plane-switching (IPS) technology, which is used by companies such as Panasonic or Hitachi. The new film inhibits the diffusion of light from the backlight, resulting in clearer pictures for the viewer. The company is aiming to mass produce the new films sometime this year, and are touting it to LCD TV manufacturers for TVs 40-inches or larger. Last but not least, this film also helps to widen the viewing angle as well, which would certainly be a boon for digital signs.
