According to Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, the company originally wanted to release a new handheld in the past three years but stopped the plan (good for them) after seeing how well the DS Lite and now its successor, the DSi is doing. Iwata did not want to delve into further details about the product, as he wants to make sure that Nintendo will maintain their current momentum with whatever hardware they have (and will release). According to Iwata, this scrapped hardware idea would have derailed the current momentum and hence fail to accomplish such a goal. What you see above is but a concept and is not the scrapped hardware Nintendo had in mind.
