The Fujitsu-Siemens external GPU was demonstrated back in November but is now making its way to selected retailers (we don’t know which, yet). The idea is simple and GPU makers had this working in the labs for years: put an discrete GPU in an external box, with its own power supply, and connect it via external PCI-E to the laptop.
So far, Fujitsu is the only laptop maker that made the plunge. The Amilo GraphicBooster has a ATI Radeon HD 3870 with 512MB of memory. It can drive three displays at once and also serves as a 2-port USB HUB. The photo above doesn’t show the big external PCI-E cable, but you can see it in the video in the full post.
How do you like the idea of having an external GPU for your laptop and how would you use it? Post a comment.
