There are some people in the world who do not mind chatting to strangers and everyone they come across, whether it be the barista that hands them their morning coffee, their server, the janitor, their hairdresser, and so on. However there are some who might prefer not speaking to anyone at all if they can help it.
The good news is that if you’re the type that dreads getting a chatty taxi driver (or Lyft or Uber driver), you might be interested to learn that Lyft could be considering offering a “zen mode” to passengers. This is according to Taggart Matthiesen, Lyft‘s head of product who shared the idea when he made an appearance on The Verge’s Converge podcast.
According to Matthiesen, “We have thought about it. I think it’s interesting. At some point, we may play around with that idea, but that’s unfortunately not a feature at this point.” With this mode, it would effectively signal to drivers that the passengers just want a quiet ride to their destination and might not want to engage in small talk.
This might come in handy as some passengers who remain quiet might come off as aloof or even “rude” to some, which could affect their ratings. With “zen mode”, at least drivers now know why some passengers are quiet during rides. However as Matthiesen points out, this is simply an idea at the moment but it doesn’t seem like it would be implemented anytime soon.
