When the Nintendo Switch was officially unveiled, there was no doubt many who were wondering what this could mean for the Nintendo 3DS. After all the Switch’s portability meant that it could easily double as a handheld console, but Nintendo back then stated that the 3DS and Switch would exist side-by-side.However fast forward to today, Nintendo could be looking for a way out. During an investor Q&A, Nintendo revealed what it would take for them to potentially retire the 3DS. According to Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima, he said that Nintendo will keep supporting the 3DS until it reaches the point where the Switch becomes a “one-person-one system” situation.
Speaking about the 3DS’ demand, “We expect that demand to continue during this fiscal year as well (March 2019), so we will continue to sell the product. Given that the Nintendo Switch is a home gaming system that can be taken on the go, this situation may change if it grows from being a one-per-household system to a one-per-person system.”
He also adds that the Switch’s price point means that it’s less likely that parents will want to buy each kid a Switch versus a 3DS. “But the price of the Nintendo Switch is not something with which most parents would buy a system for every one of their children in a short period of time.” That being said if both consoles are doing well, at least by Nintendo’s standards, we suppose there’s no real need to end support for either.
