One of the features of Inbox and Gmail that Google rolled out a couple of years ago is Smart Reply. This is a nifty feature that uses AI to scan the contents of your email, and based on that it will provide users with a bunch of different reply options that are appropriate to the email. These responses are short and designed to be quick, making replying certain emails a lot faster.
Now it seems that Google wants to bring the feature to more chat apps, and not just those made by Google. Like we said, the feature is available for Inbox and Gmail and Allo, but Google’s internal incubator Area 120 wants to bring it onto other apps like Google Hangouts and Android Messages.
As TechCrunch points out, Smart Reply already works on Android Messages for those on Project Fi, but the plan is to roll it out on a wider scale. Also like we said, Google wants to potentially bring the feature to other chat apps, such as WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Skype, Twitter DMs, Slack, and so on.
However exactly how they will go about doing it remains to be seen, and whether or not they’ll go through with it is also anyone’s guess. There is also the question of whether or not other developers want to integrate Google’s features into their apps or if it would be better to develop their own, but what do you guys think?
