It was reported a few years ago that Microsoft’s Xbox division was working on a wearable device. While images of the so-called Xbox Watch have been leaked online before, the latest images show us a running unit of the Xbox Watch. The images reveal a very early prototype of this wearable device that only supported four apps at that point in time – GPS, Workout, Settings, and a USB debugger meant for developers.
This is the device that preceded the Microsoft Band wearable device and it’s possible that the technology that was developed for the Xbox Watch was eventually integrated into the Microsoft Band. However, it’s not like that device had a good run because Microsoft ended up discontinuing the Band.
The images show that the Xbox Watch likely supported heart rate monitoring, dedicated app workouts, and GPS location tracking. The interface looks similar to the Band wearable device and the Xbox UI tiles from 2013.
It has been a while since Microsoft launched a wearable fitness tracker and it seems that the company has lost interest in this form factor, at least for now. It doesn’t seem to have any plans for such a device right now and it can’t be said for sure if we’ll ever see a device like this from Microsoft in the future.
