One of the interesting choices that Nintendo made with the Nintendo Switch was to use memory cards as game cards/cartridges. However this kept the footprint small, which is important when you consider that the Switch was designed to be played on the go, but the problem was that compared to Blu-ray discs, storage isn’t quite as huge.
However Nintendo had plans to launch game cards with bigger storage capacities, such as a 64GB game card, but according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, that rollout might have been delayed. The report claims that according to people familiar with the matter, Nintendo has delayed launching 64GB game cards for the Switch in 2018, and instead it could be launched in 2019.
What this means is that developers who might have game file sizes larger than 32GB won’t be able to fit all of the data onto the card. An alternative would be that the core game files could be stored on the game card, and the rest downloaded over the internet and stored on the Switch or a memory card. The only downside is that it will require an internet connection, which in some cases might not always be possible, especially when gamers just want to plug in and play straight away.
That being said none of this is official information yet so take it with a grain of salt.
