Apple fans really love to line up outside the company’s retail stores so that they’re the first ones to get the new device. There will be lines outside some store locations when the iPhone X is released tomorrow. You’d definitely be surprised if you saw lines forming outside stories a couple of days before with people actually coming out of the store with what seems to be the new iPhone. That’s the impression some New Yorkers got when an improv group set up a fake Apple store with an equally fake iPhone X line.
Improv Everywhere transformed a New York City subway station entrance into a fake Apple Store. They even staffed it with fake employees and had fake customers line up outside for the iPhone X.
The group affixed a large Apple logo to a glass elevator at the corner of East 23rd Street and Park Avenue in Manhattan. There were 50 fake customers lined up along the sidewalk as fake employees wearing blue shirts with Apple logos cheered as people took the elevator down to the trains.
Naturally, many people were interested in finding out what was going on. They were told that Apple was opening a new store in the subway station as the one on Fifth Avenue is undergoing renovations, which it actually is.
Some people even lined up because they thought they could score an iPhone X. The improv group made it all seem so convincing as it even had people coming out of the elevators holding white bags while being cheered on by the employees.
Some New Yorkers even took to reddit to express their surprise over what was going on. A few believed the improv group’s line that it was a silent iPhone X release to advertise the new store.
Since the group didn’t want to waste anyone’s time, they told people who lined up that the store had run out of phones and that the 50 people who were in line first would only get it. All 50 of them were in on the act.
This entire gag required a lot of effort so props to the group for pulling it off!
