If you follow political developments in the United States, you will be well aware that there’s a lot of noise about Russia’s alleged role in meddling with the U.S. presidential election last year. Some claim that Russian hackers did enough damage to swing the election in President Trump’s favor. While there have been claims and counter-claims, many might have been surprised to hear that President Trump and President Putin have discussed forming a “cyber security unit” as a means to protect against election hacking.
This has been confirmed by none other than the President of the United States Donald Trump himself via his preferred medium of communication: Twitter.
The two met at the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. This was the first time the two world leaders met in what was a highly anticipated meeting. It happened at a time when investigators in the United States are investigating possible collusion between the president’s campaign and Russian officials.
“Putin & I discussed forming an impenetrable Cyber Security unit so that election hacking, & many other negative things, will be guarded and safe,” the president tweeted.
No further details about this cyber security unit have been released so it’s unclear how it’s going to function and what it’s area of work is going to be. I’m sure many would just appreciate if it did something about stopping those global ransomware attacks that have been causing havoc recently.
