Smartphones are pretty much tiny computers that fit into our pockets. This means that just like a regular desktop or laptop computer, there are certain components necessary for it to run, such as a CPU, RAM, memory, an operating system, and a GPU. For the most part a lot of phones these days are powered by Adreno GPUs, even Samsung’s, but that could change.
In a report out of China posted onto Weibo (via Phandroid), it seems that Samsung might have developed their own GPU for use in their mobile devices. Samsung has been somewhat self-sufficient when it comes to components for their phones as not only does the company make displays, they make their own Exynos chipsets, memory, and so on, so for them to start making their own GPUs really doesn’t come as a surprise.
In fact you might recall that back in 2016, there was a rumor that Samsung was in talks with NVIDIA and AMD about making their own mobile GPUs, and if this report is accurate it looks like Samsung’s plans might have come to fruition. We’re not sure who might have ultimately helped Samsung with their plans so it remains to be seen.
No word on when we can expect to see these GPUs find their way into Samsung’s own mobile handsets so until we see it or hear from Samsung officially, do take it with a grain of salt for now.
