For the longest time ever, displays were typically seen as rigid sort of devices where they were pretty much fixed and were unmovable. For the most part this is true since trying to bend your TV, monitors, or phone will result in it cracking. However we’ve known that Samsung and LG have been working on displays that can flex, but Samsung is taking it one step further.
The company has recently announced (via Engadget) what could be the world’s first stretchable OLED display. Yes, instead of merely being able to bend or fold, this display can stretch (to a certain extent) which means that damaging it will be harder than traditional displays, since the stretchiness means slightly more give when getting knocked around.
The prototype that was unveiled by the company came in the form of a 9.1-inch display that can be bent, rolled, and survive dents of up to half an inch deep before reverting back to its final form. We’re not sure what such technology could be used for, but given that it sounds like it will be highly adaptable, it could be used for all kinds of things such as for cars, home appliances, computers, TV, phones, wearables, and so on.
Unfortunately the technology behind these displays is still relatively young, which means that it will be a while before we see it commercialized. In the meantime phones with flexible displays have yet to become mainstream, but rumor has it that Samsung is planning to launch such devices later this year.
