According to a new report, Facebook is going to make its move into the premium TV-like show segment next month. The report claims that the Facebook premium TV shows will be available starting mid-June. It may launch two dozen shows initially and has reportedly greenlit multiple shows for production.
Citing multiple people familiar with the plans, Business Insider reports that Facebook has given the green signal to start production on several TV shows.
Facebook is reportedly looking for shows in two distinct tiers that include longer, big-budget shows that would be similar to conventional TV shows and less expensive shorter shows that would last up to ten minutes and refresh every 24 hours.
If it does decide to go into original programming, it will allow Facebook to compete effectively against the likes of YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Video. All of them have invested considerable resources in the production of original content.
The report adds that Facebook views high-quality, scripted video content as an important feature to retain its nearly 2 billion users, particularly younger users that are flocking to Snapchat.
Facebook declined to comment on the story so there’s no official information as yet regarding its original video content plans. We’ll have to wait and see if and when this announcement in made next month.
