You might have heard about Amazon’s plans to revolutionize the way we shop for groceries with Amazon Go. For those who haven’t heard about Amazon Go, basically this is Amazon’s vision of the future where a retail shop is packed full of sensors so that customers can just pick up what they need and go without having to queue at a cashier.
This is because for every item you pick up, it will be scanned and added to your account, where you will be charged via your credit card. It sounds like quite a dream system, but unfortunately a report from The Wall Street Journal has revealed that Amazon has run into some issues with the system and has since delayed its launch.
The company was apparently targeting a launch by the end of March, but it seems that the system at the moment isn’t functioning as well as Amazon would like. It turns out that it isn’t equipped to handle more than 20 customers at once, and anything more and the system will break down and people in the store become too difficult to follow.
Unfortunately it is unclear as to when Amazon Go will be launched following this setback, but clearly this is a problem that Amazon needs to deal with. It is also an interesting move for Amazon who has largely existed in the virtual space, although in recent times the company has expanded their physical operations to include bookstores and last we heard, they were also planning an augmented reality furniture store.
