With the Nintendo Switch, the company is certainly changing the way they do certain things. For starters the console will have a new paid online service that will be a first for the company, and it seems that there will also be an accompanying smartphone app that will actually function as a lobby and help matchmake games.
This was revealed during an interview with GameSpot (see video above) in which Nintendo of America’s President Reggie Fils-Aime revealed the details. According to Fils-Aime, “The smart phone app that we’re creating, that will be part of our online service, we believe is going to be a very compelling part of the overall proposition because that’s how you’ll voice chat, that’s how you’ll do your matchmaking, and create your lobby.”
He also goes on to add that he believes that this will be a more elegant solution. “We also think it’s a very elegant solution because if you’ve taken your switch on the go, you’ve put yourself in a hotspot, you’re looking at get a quick match of Mario Kart in, to whip out some sort of bulky, gamer headset is a bit of a challenge. So we think we’ve got an elegant solution.”
However it seems that many gamers aren’t so convinced. After all if gamers have to juggle two devices just to play a multiplayer game, how is that elegant? What if their phone runs out of battery, what then? We guess this is something that needs to be put into practice to see how effective it is, but for now color us skeptical, but what do you guys think?
