It was reported late last month that WhatsApp was testing a new feature for its Android app in India. The feature will enable users to stream shared videos as they’re being downloaded. The feature has gone live. WhatsApp for Android users will now be able to stream videos shared with them as they’re being downloaded thus eliminating the wait. The latest update has also added another minor feature to the Android app.

Both of these new features were initially limited to the beta version of WhatsApp for Android but the latest update makes them available to all users.

The biggest feature in this update is the ability to stream shared videos as they’re being downloaded. This feature will prove to be very helpful for those who have enabled for manual downloading of shared content. If they have opted for auto-download, the shared videos are automatically saved either over Wi-Fi or cellular depending upon how the user has configured this option.

Animated GIF support has also arrived on WhatsApp for Android. Users can now send a GIF in WhatsApp through the attach file button. Users will also be able to crop the GIF before sending it. The app is going to create an “Animated GIFs” folder inside its directory where also received GIFs will be stored.

The updated WhatsApp for Android app has been rolled out and it’s now available for download via the Google Play Store.
