One of the interesting aspects of the Nintendo Switch is that in its reveal trailer, it was more or less confirmed that the console would accept cartridges as opposed to other mediums such as optical discs, which is what consoles like the PS4, Xbox One, and even the Wii U had accepted.
It also more or less confirms that using the console to play Blu-ray discs to watch movies is out of the question. That being said, a recent tweet by The Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki has revealed the cartridge’s storage size, which according to Mochizuki will be launched at a “standard” size of 16GB.
What this means is that the max storage of the game card is pretty much the size of one layer of a Blu-ray game. It also means that maybe it is possible that Skyrim Special Edition will not be one of the games available for the Switch, especially since the game takes up more than 20GB. So this means either the game won’t be available, or it will be toned down to fit onto the cartridge.
It has been suggested in the past that the Switch won’t be a powerhouse compared to consoles from Microsoft or Sony, so if the cartridge size is set at 16GB, the quality of game assets might not be as good a quality as we would like. There is also talk of the Switch sporting a 720p screen, which means that 16GB should be enough. In any case take it with a grain of salt, but we expect more information to be revealed in 2017 ahead of the console’s release.
