Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of months, there’s a very, very good chance you’ve come across the viral song of 2016, “PPAP”, also known as the Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen song. Going viral is a feat in itself, but it also seems that the song has managed to set a Guinness World Record.
What’s the record for? Apparently the song has managed to set the record for being the shortest song to make the US Billboard Hot 100 charts. Running for 45 seconds, the song has managed to rack up more than a combined 200 million views across the various YouTube channels that it has been uploaded to.
Sung and performed by Japanese artist Piko-Taro, he said at a recent press conference, “I’m a huge exception in Japan. No one is like me in Japan and I think that is why everybody is laughing at me.” He adds, “What I will continue to do is to release songs one after another at great speed. They will be fun and interesting and then I will have some famous person tweet about me again.”
When asked as to whether or not he plans to hold a world tour, Piko-Taro replied jokingly, “Do you think anybody would want to come? My song is one minute. If I perform 20 pieces, the concert ends in 20 minutes.
