It has been widely speculated that Apple could be building their own electric car which internally is being referred to as “Project Titan”. There is some evidence of that happening as Apple has made many hires over the past couple of years of personnel that have some kind of automotive experience.
However in a recent post on PC Mag by Tim Bajarin, he seems to suggest that maybe Project Titan isn’t about building a car. We should note that Bajarin’s piece is more of an opinion/commentary article, although he does raise some interesting points that could be worth considering.
For starters, Bajarin points out that creating a car from scratch could be quite a monumental task given how competitive the industry is, and with more seasoned and experienced players. Instead, he suggests that Project Titan is more about enhancing existing vehicles either through software, or through some hardware that will give it more capabilities and make them smarter.
An example could be that Apple might create some kind of self-driving kit that can be easily retrofitted onto cars by a mechanic, thus giving it a host of sensors and tools that only a newer or higher-end model would have. Of course all of this is speculative and we should note that there was a recent report in which Apple is supposedly rebooting the project and cutting a ton of jobs, so that’s something to think about.
However Bajarin argues that why would Apple put Bob Mansfield back in charge if they were killing the project? He states that Mansfield is most probably tightening the focus on the project and maybe trimmed the excess, leading to layoffs. In any case what do you guys think? Does this make more sense than Apple trying to build a car from scratch?
