Last year NVIDIA relaunched their SHIELD Tablet as the SHIELD Tablet K1. Earlier this year, another NVIDIA tablet-like device was spotted at the FCC, hinting that maybe NVIDIA had a new tablet in the works. Unfortunately it seems that the device might have already been cancelled, so if you were hoping for a follow-up tablet, you might be disappointed.
How do we know it was cancelled? The folks at Android Police have spotted a dismissal request letter submitted to the FCC by NVIDIA. According to the letter, it states that the company had decided to cancel the product due to “business reasons”, but other than that they weren’t more specific, although Android Police notes that it is possible due to declining tablet sales that NVIDIA might have chosen to focus their resources elsewhere.
So far NVIDIA’s tablet offerings have been relatively well-received, but we suppose to be fair in the face of competitors like Apple whose iPad continues to dominate, and Samsung who has the resources to churn out tablets in all manner and sizes, and let’s not forget Microsoft and their Surface tablets, it certainly is a pretty tough market to compete in.
Will we be seeing more SHIELD tablets from NVIDIA in the future? We suppose that’s a bit hard to say, but for now we guess we shouldn’t expect anything anytime soon.
