While there are VR headsets from Samsung, LG, and Google, just to name a few, in terms of dedicated VR headsets there are probably only two main ones in the market right now: the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive (with Sony’s PlayStation VR coming this October), and now it looks like the HTC Vive has taken the clear lead.
This is according to the stats on Steam which revealed that the HTC Vive is clearly in the lead with a market share of 66%. This is versus the Oculus Rift which has a market share of 27.5%, while the remaining headsets are basically the Oculus Rift developer kits, which presumably users have since moved onto the retail version.
Of course it should be noted that these numbers are based on the Steam platform, meaning that in terms of global market share that includes games that aren’t available on Steam, the Oculus Rift’s numbers could be higher. However if anything this does seem to be in line with reviews of either headset.
So far reviews of the HTC Vive have been pretty stellar and despite the expensive price, many gamers have been flocking to it. It is admittedly still very early in the game to declare which device is the “winner”, but for now it looks like the HTC Vive is in the lead. Perhaps when the PlayStation VR is released this October it could give HTC/Valve a run for their money.
