Apple confirmed earlier this year that it’s going to make its first TV show that’s going to revolve around app developers. It’s an unscripted reality show called Planet of the Apps. Some might be under the impression that Apple is gearing up to create lots of original content, and as rumors of its TV streaming service continue to come up, one might get the impression that it’s trying to take on the likes of Netflix. On the contrary, Apple says this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue has said in an interview that Apple is only interested in creating original content if it feels it to be complementary to what it’s already creating for Apple Music or its platform. “We’re not in the business of trying to create TV shows,” Cue added.
Even though Apple can be seen as infringing on their territory, the company doesn’t see Netflix or even Comcast as competitors in the streaming media or original series market. Cue clarified that Apple is not trying to buy any studio to compete with these companies.
Apple’s TV ambitions still remain shrouded in mystery. The long-rumored TV streaming service is yet to materialize even though the company has already launched an overhauled Apple TV set-top box. The company has also recently been rumored to be interested in bidding for a major stake in the Formula 1 racing series, which if it does end up buying, would probably be broadcast in one way or the other on Apple’s platform.
