Virtual reality is here to stay and many companies are now jumping on the bandwagon. Mobile companies appear convinced that they have to dabble in virtual reality to improve their fortunes which is why we’re seeing many conventional smartphone makers now developing VR headsets. Acer is one of those companies and it has teamed up with game studio Starbreeze on a high-end VR headset.
The virtual reality headset that Acer is working on with Starbreeze isn’t meant for use with smartphones, like the Gear VR. This headset is being developed primarily for use in theme parks and arcades.
Starbreeze has been showing off this headset, called the StarVR, since last year. From now on development on the headset will take place as a result of the collaboration between Acer and Starbreeze.
StarVR is believed to have a wide field of vision which aids in providing a more immersive user experience. Starbreeze has designed this headset to have a 210-degree field of view that’s significantly wider than the 110-degree field of view on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.
The game studio stands to gain from this partnership with Acer as the latter has a lot of experience with hardware development, this partnership will help to quickly scale up the headsets that Starbreeze has been making.
As a result of this collaboration Acer will also develop notebooks and desktops that are capable of powering the StarVR headsets so eventually, they may find their way into our homes as well.
