When it comes to virtual reality (VR), Samsung is one of the players in the game with the Gear VR. It is a perfectly fine headset but due to the fact that it has to be powered by your phone and also because of the lack of controllers, it is a bit limiting in what it can do compared to dedicated headsets like the HTC Vive.
However it looks like that could soon change. According to a report from Variety, Samsung has confirmed that they are working on a dedicated VR headset that will be independent of mobile devices. According to Samsung’s head of R&D Injong Rhee, “We are working on wireless and dedicated VR devices, not necessarily working with our mobile phone.”
Unfortunately when this headset will be released remains to be seen, but the company is looking into including features like hand and gesture tracking, but Rhee cautions that it might be years before we see these features from the company. So far headsets like the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift rely on controllers to help with tracking and movement.
In the meantime while Samsung is working on their dedicated VR headset, the company has confirmed the release of its Gear 360 VR camera which has been set for the 29th of April, 2016.
