Out of all the virtual reality headsets we’ve seen to date, the HTC Vive is the most expensive of the lot with a price tag of $800. This means should you break it, that’s going to be a pretty terrible feeling. However the good news is that if you were to repair it, it seems that the HTC Vive is actually pretty repairable.
According to the folks at iFixit, they have recently conducted a teardown on the HTC Vive and have given it a very optimistic score of 8 out of 10 in terms of repairability. iFixit claims that while the HTC Vive is a complicated piece of hardware, breaking it down proved to be pretty easy and there was no damage to the components during the process.
This means that unlike certain smartphones or laptops, the HTC Vive does not use a lot of glue which could damage components (or make them impossible to remove) upon their removal. They also found that the headset used pretty common Philips and Torx screws meaning that no special tools will be needed to remove them.
It was also discovered that the HTC Vive actually reused some components from the Steam Controller, indicating that there are replacement parts readily available should they be needed, as opposed to specialized/custom components that might be rarer. So if you’re looking for a virtual reality headset that can be easily fixed, the HTC Vive might be worth looking at.
