Apple’s CEO Tim Cook thinks that virtual reality is “really cool”, so much so that the company had hired one of the leading experts on the technology. However could Apple’s interest in virtual reality merely be passing, or could it lead to an actual product? While it is still unclear, it seems that Apple’s interest has actually been growing.
Speaking to The Wall Street Journal, the director of Stanford’s Virtual Human Interaction Lab, Jeremy Bailenson revealed that Apple employees have actually been spending a fair bit of time in the lab. Apparently they have not showed up for more than a decade, but only recently that they started showing up more often.
According to Bailenson, “Apple hasn’t come to my lab in the last 13 years, except they’ve come three times in the last three months. They come and they don’t say a word, but there’s a data point for you.” Like we said, this could merely be Apple exploring the idea as opposed to actually creating a product.
However with companies like Google, Samsung, HTC, Valve, Sony, and Facebook all getting into virtual reality, we can’t say we blame Apple for being curious to see what all the fuss is about. If and when they do unveil something, chances are it could be years before that happens. Until then we can only speculate about the company’s interest in the tech.
