While Spotify might have started out as a music streaming platform, given the competition these days, it’s not hard to imagine that Spotify will want to diversify a bit. The company had initially announced their plans last May and over the past few months, have slowly been testing the service in select markets.
However according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Spotify is expected to roll out its video streaming services in earnest starting this week, where the feature is said to first launch on Android, followed by a rollout to iOS users by the end of next week. So far it seems that only four markets have been chosen for launch: the US, UK, Germany, and Sweden.
According to Shiva Rajaraman, Spotify’s VP of Product, “We are at the end of a journey of testing. We are going out effectively as planned. Our goal was largely to get a wide breadth of content and experiment and test.” Once this rolls out, Spotify’s users can look forward to content from the likes of the BBC, Comedy Central, ESPN, Maker News, MTV, and Vice News.
The good news is also that for now, the videos launched by Spotify will not contain any ads, mainly as Spotify wants the feature to be a way to get more users on board, as well as to entice them to stay, although we suppose monetization is probably in cards in the future.
