Range anxiety is a big issue with electric cars, the thought that the car might run out of charge when you’re in the middle of a journey can be unnerving to say the least, even though companies like Tesla are putting up fast-charging stations to ensure that electric car owners can drive from coast to coast. There’s much to be done to improve the range of electric vehicles and now Samsung has come up with a new battery prototype that boasts impressive range.
Samsung SDI, the Korean conglomerate’s battery manufacturing division, unveiled this prototype electric car battery design at the Detroit Auto Show. It says that this high-density prototype EV battery can provide electric cars with a range of up to 373 miles on a single charge, a significant improvement as opposed to most EV batteries out there that struggle to go past a range of 300 miles.
It may take a while from Samsung’s electric car batteries make their way to the market, the company itself predicts that it will begin commercial production of these batteries by 2020. By then it’s likely that the company would have made further improvements to promise even more range out of them.
Samsung may not be thinking about making these batteries just because there’s demand in the market not for electric cars. The company is believed to be working on its own car of the future, one that might be self-driving and powered by electricity, and for that purpose it would make perfect sense for Samsung to make batteries that it can not only use in its own cars but also sell to carmakers who are making similar vehicles.
