The market has not been gentle with PCs, over the past few quarters shipments have been continuously on the decline, and things didn’t turn out to be any better last year. Some believed that perhaps they might surge during the holiday quarter but that’s far from reality. Turns out PC shipments saw their biggest decline yet in the 2015 holiday season.
Compared to the same time in 2014, PC shipments in the holiday quarter last year are down over ten percent. 2015 itself didn’t do much to improve the fortunes of the PC market as shipments dived below 300 million units, that’a first since 2008.
Data from the IDC worldwide quarterly PC tracker released yesterday doesn’t bring any good news at all for the future of the PC market, provided that this trend continues in the coming quarters, and there’s really no indication that things will improve over the next few months.
A big reason for this decline is the rise in popularity of mobile devices like smartphone and tablets which are moving more powerful and capable every year. The global economy is also to blame because devalued currencies in major markets, as well as unsold inventory from Windows 8.1 devices, made sales struggle this past holiday season.
As far as manufacturers are concerned Lenovo retained its top spot as it accounted for more than 20 percent of all PC shipments, HP came second and Dell bagged the last place on the podium. On the other hand, Apple saw its share increase in the PC market, it’s now up to 7.9 percent.
