SpaceX is one of the few private space companies that wants to put humans on Mars as soon as possible. Company founder and CEO Elon Musk has said that he’s going to reveal the company’s plans for a Mars spacecraft later this year, adding that he wants to send humans to the neighboring planet by 2025. Musk is of the view that colonizing Mars is absolutely crucial for the survival of our race and to achieve the dream of becoming a “multi-planet” species.
Going to Mars isn’t as easy as boarding a plane. Technological breakthroughs are necessary for humans to even reach the planet, setting up a base there with life support systems is going to be a task in itself, simply put this is easier said than done.
However, this isn’t the only mind-boggling idea that Musk has expressed with regards to Mars. He’s even floated the idea of nuking Mars to make conditions more suitable for human life to survive on the Red Planet.
“Mars is the next natural step. In fact, it’s the only planet we have a shot at establishing a self-sustaining city on,” says Elon Musk. He also revealed that he plans on taking a trip to space in the next five years even though he hasn’t had much astronaut training. Musk doesn’t think it’s going to be that hard, “It’s not that hard to float around,” he says.
