It would seem as though it is mandatory for each company, regardless of the products that they sell, to offer a flagship model or device to the masses. Basically, that would be something that is on the high end side of things, on par with what the competition offer to boot. It does not matter if you are selling cars or smartphones, the principle applies. After all, flagship models do boast of the epitome of your technological innovation and inventiveness, and Samsung knows that. This must be the reason that Samsung has been cranking up the number of flagship models in recent years, with the latest rumor from Evan Blass being that of Samsung preparing themselves to offer at least 5 flagship smartphones in 2016.
Number of Samsung flagships:
2010 – 1
2011 – 2
2012 – 2
2013 – 2
2014 – 3
2015 – 4
2016 – 5+ (rumored)

Yup, you read that right – at least 5. In 2010, it was just the Samsung Galaxy S, and then followed by the Samsung Galaxy S2 which was accompanied by the Samsung Galaxy Note in 2011, bringing the total number of flagship models to 2. Subsequently, it was remained that way until 2014, where there were three flagship models during that year. 2015 then saw a quartet of flagship devices being announced, and this would include the Plus and Edge versions of the Samsung Galaxy S6, and hence he claims that there will be a minimum of five flagship models next year from Samsung.
On what does Evan base his assumption on? We do not really know, so do take this with more than a pinch of salt.
