Many Amazon users are saying that they have received an email from the company informing them that it has force-reset their account passwords due to what may be a leak. It’s unclear how many accounts it has found to be affected and their passwords compromised, users also say that they received the same message on their account message center on amazon.com and amazon.co.uk. This is what confirms that the leak is genuine and not a widespread phishing attempt.

The email mentions that Amazon has recently discovered that the particular user’s password may have been improperly stored on their device or transmitted to Amazon in a way that could potentially expose it to a third party.

“We have corrected the issue to prevent this exposure,” the company adds in its email, while saying that there’s no reason to believe that the passwords were actually disclosed to a third party. Amazon says that it’s doing this out of an “abundance of caution.”

Amazon also made a pretty big change recently to ensure that its users remained safe, it enabled two-factor authentication for all Amazon.com users, however the same has yet to be enabled for Amazon.co.uk customers.

So far Amazon has not commented on these latest string of emails to users across the United States and United Kingdom.
