If you’ve always wanted a 3D scanner for whatever reasons but felt that the current models available are a bit too pricey, you might be in luck. It seems that there is a Kickstarter project for a device called the Eora 3D scanner which basically harnesses the power of your smartphone’s camera and turns it into a 3D scanner.
According to one of its creators Rahul Koduri, cost was pretty much the reason why the device was created in the first place. “The eora 3D Scanner was born out of our own need for an affordable and highly-precise 3D scanner We needed to capture the specifications of a reflective parabolic dish that was used to track the sun’s trajectory to improve solar power output. When we originally looked for what was available we were shocked that scanners that are precise to sub-100 microns cost at least $5000.”
So with regular scanners costing several thousand, how much will the Eora 3D scanner cost? The retailer price has been set at $330, although backers can pick one up from as low as $199. As for how it works, the scanner basically scans by emitting a green laser beam, which then connects via Bluetooth to your phone’s camera and from there, it will be able to create a 3D scan of the object in full color.
Admittedly this gadget might be for a rather niche audience, but in the event you do need one, this could be worth considering. To help back the project or find out more, hit up its Kickstarter page for the details.
