Earlier this year a Sony fitness tracker was spotted at the FCC with a built-in heart rate sensor. A couple of months ago, the Sony SmartBand 2 app was launched but there was still no sight of the fitness tracker, until now where Sony has officially launched the SmartBand 2, the successor to last year’s SmartBand but with some upgraded features.
Sure enough just like what the FCC filing revealed, the SmartBand 2 will come with a built-in heart rate sensor, so if tracking your heart rate is important to you, then the SmartBand 2 is an option you can consider. Apart from that, it will come with the same features as you might expect from other trackers.
This includes the ability to be notified of incoming calls, messages, emails, or social media, thanks to the built-in vibrations and multicolored LEDs. The band itself is made from silicone and according to Sony, the entire device is IP68 certified, meaning that it is protected against water to a certain degree.
There is also an accompanying app for the device that can track your sleep if you wear it to bed, and will play nicely with iOS and Android devices. It is also said to feature a 2 day battery life. In terms of availability, the Sony SmartBand 2 will be going on sale from September onwards where it will be priced at €119 (~$133), although this might vary from region to region.
