Apple’s mobile platform has quite an incredible draw on developers, namely because its iOS platform is used by many around the world, leading developers to prefer developing for iOS first before moving onto other platforms. In fact we’ve seen how strong this draw is when even Microsoft decided to release their mobile version of Office for the iPad ahead of Windows.
That being said, it looks like Apple is looking to give back to the rest of the community. According to a recent job listing, it would see that Apple is looking to hire software engineers that will “help us bring exciting new mobile products to the Android platform.” As it stands aside from the Move to iOS app that lets Android users prepare themselves to migrate to iOS, the Cupertino company does not have any other apps available for Android.
Sure, we suppose you could count Beats Music after it was acquired by Apple, and then the upcoming Apple Music app for Android (which is scheduled for this fall), but other than that Apple’s presence outside its own iTunes App Store is pretty much non-existent. However as this job listing would suggest, it looks like Apple wants to start expanding beyond its own borders.
It’s really anyone’s guess as to what kind of app Apple has planned for Android devices. The job listing could simply be asking for a software engineer who can develop Android apps as opposed to developing a specific app, but either way we are intrigued.
