According to a report from yesterday, it was suggested that Nintendo could be planning to use Android for their next-gen console, which was revealed earlier this year to be the Nintendo NX. It was admittedly a rather wild rumor and it looks like the rumors are false. Nintendo has since come forward and refuted them.
According to a statement released by a Nintendo spokesman, “There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX.” We suppose this doesn’t come as a surprise, but at the same time the idea of Nintendo adopting Android for the NX made sense on some levels as well.
One of the reasons the Wii U isn’t being as widely adopted is because developers are refusing to make games for it. By adopting Android, Nintendo would have access to a wide range of developers who are already familiar with the platform, not to mention it would make a lot of games instantly available for the console as well.
At the same time, despite being a Kickstarter darling, the OUYA Android console hasn’t been doing too well, showing that despite it being a good idea and with it running Android, it isn’t necessarily a guaranteed success. Nintendo promised that the NX console would surprise everyone, but the company will only reveal more details about the device in 2016.
