mikme-02Anyone who has tried to use a phone as a sound recorder knows how powerful and convenient it is. It is however far from perfect: for one, microphones are optimized for conversations, not general sound recording. Secondly, we often have to leave the phone near a person during an interview, and any buzz or notification noise will show up in the recording, which is not ideal.

Mikme aims to solve this problem with this Bluetooth-connected microphone which claims to feature high-end features and extreme simplicity. You have to admit, an always-on connection and a one-button recording seems pretty appealing.

The design of Mikme is clean and simple. It’s a little box that has a mesh design to let airwaves coming in. At the top, there’s one button to start/stop the recording. Arguably the materials could look nicer, maybe, but I’m a big fan of pragmatic designs that make sense, and this seems to be one of those.

Inside, the recording device has 8GB of memory, which is a lot of storage for an audio recording device. That’s because it records in 24-bit and 96Khz, which means that the sound quality is not degraded by the digital encoding. And Mikme’s creators would point out that their device will tune the microphone gain automatically for you.

"A NEW LEVEL OF EXTREME SIMPLICITY"There’s also a 7-hour battery, which should be sufficient for the target audience: media professionals. To cater that market, it’s also possible to connect the microphone with a cable to a camera (via the 3.5mm audio out), or listen directly from it, with headphones. You can also turn it into a regular USB microphone, thanks to the micro-USB port which also acts as a charging medium (smart!).

Mikme is designed to push the audio-recording workflow to a new level of extreme simplicity. No wires, no setup, just drop and record… in high quality. There’s a free iOS that lets people edit audio. The Android version will come only later this year.

On paper, Mikme seems to be the one microphone to rule them all. We have tried it in production yet, but this is one idea worth looking at: Mikme official page
