The Beats Pill XL Bluetooth speaker was launched by Beats back in 2013, back when it was an independent company. Apple only acquired the company about a year back so it had nothing to do with the development of this product. Now given that Beats is an Apple-owned company, Cupertino has to stick with it through thick and thin. With a possible fire risk associated with the Beats Pill XL coming to light, Apple has decided to recall the product.
Apple today announced a voluntary recall of all Beats XL devices. It encourages customers to refrain from using the product anymore since there’s a possible risk of fire.
In a press release the company says that “in rare cases the battery in the Beats Pill XL may overheat and pose a fire safety risk.” Apple has received reports of eight units overheating and at least one user suffering burns as a result of overheating. The recall impacts more than 222,000 units sold in the U.S. and around 11,000 units sold in Canada.
To provide an incentive to Beats Pill XL owners who may not otherwise take part in the recall, Apple will give them $325. This covers the $299.99 retail price of this speaker as well as a $25 bonus, the payment will be provided either in Apple Store credit or through electronic payment.
If you happen to have a Beats Pill XL, fill out the form on Apple’s website and wait for the company to send you a box to return the unit in. The refund will be processed in three weeks.
