One of the main differences between iPhones and other brands and platforms is the microSD card support. A lot of Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry handsets support memory expansion via microSD which is usually a cheaper way of increasing the memory on one’s phone.
The microSD card also acts like extra storage to allow users to move files around in the event they have to, but some of Xiaomi’s offerings oddly enough lack microSD support. So why is that? Speaking at the launch of the Mi 4i in Hong Kong, Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra explains why the company isn’t a fan of microSD cards.
According to Barra, it’s a design issue. The inclusion of a microSD card slot means that Xiaomi needs to compromise in other areas, such as battery capacity, ergonomics, and possibly even a second SIM card slot. There are also functionality issues too as Barra explains that microSD cards in general are prone to failure and malfunctioning.
“You think you’re buying like a Kingston or a SanDisk but you’re actually not, and they’re extremely poor quality, they’re slow, they sometimes just stop working, and it gives people huge number of issues, apps crashing all the time, users losing data, a lot of basically complaints and customer frustration.” What do you guys make of Barra’s statements? Do you agree that microSD cards are more trouble than they are worth?
