When the Apple Watch was launched, there were a selection of bands that users could choose from, but they were pretty much all from Apple. For some this might not be a big deal, for others they might prefer to have more choices. Last week we reported that according to an Apple Watch guide, there was reference made to third-party bands.
Well for users who love choices and customization, you will be pleased to learn that Apple has indeed launched such a program. This program is basically similar to the Made for iPhone program, except that it is called the Made for Apple Watch program but basically third-party manufacturers will have to adhere to certain guidelines in order to receive the certification from Apple.
For starters the lugs used to attach the bands to the watch will either be provided by Apple or these manufacturers can choose to make them themselves, although the materials used will have to be Apple-approved which we can only assume is to assure a certain level of quality. They are also expected to comply with environmental regulations and will not be allowed to integrate magnetic chargers into the straps.
While there have been some crowdfunding schemes for Apple Watch bands, they were launched before this program so we can’t be sure if they will be seeking for the certification or if they will continue as planned, but either way hopefully we can now look forward to seeing some interesting creations from third-party manufacturers.
