Now for the most part, this won’t really affect the end-user. Basically the algorithm will now start to favor websites that have been optimized for mobile devices, pushing it up in its search rankings while websites that have yet to be optimized will be pushed to the back. This isn’t a new announcement per se as Google had previously announced these changes not too long ago.
According to Itai Sadan, the CEO of website building company Duda who spoke to the folks at Business Insider, “I think the people who are at risk are those who don’t know about it. Come April 21, a lot of small businesses are going to be really surprised that the number of visitors to their websites has dropped significantly. This is going to affect millions of sites on the web.”
Sadan states that this will also affect websites that rely on localized search which could see results pushed back and demoted simply because they weren’t mobile friendly. So if you have a website that has yet to be optimized for mobile devices, it’s best that you get on it lest you find a huge decrease in your traffic in the next few weeks.
